Do you ever have those days when you wake up and you either want to bite everyone's head off or listen to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" and waller around wondering "why the heck am I feeling like a sap today?"
Okay, so maybe JT was a stretch, but really, I'm talking about those days when you're just "off." You had plenty of sleep, drank 2 cups of coffee and a 3rd for good measure, but just can't shake that edge. I'm not referring to lack of faith, or loss of inner peace or feng schwit, fung shui, Chi or Zen... I mean, just off. If you're a woman reading this, men would say you were PMS'ing (pre-menstrual syndrome'ing). If you're a man reading this, we women would say you were PMS'ing ('privates' malfunction syndrome'ing). Either way, we're just reaching for a reason why someone would be acting weird for no apparent reason. I have a slight inkling as to what may be ailing us poor, complex humans during these odd days.
My answer and the culprit - hormones. We all have them. Men and women alike. Those imperfect days don't make us the "negative" person, as opposed to the "positive" person because we can't find the silver lining in the cloud. It doesn't mean we lack faith or need to get on anti-depressants. It means we're human. And part of being human is being intricately made, requiring nutrients and attention to function normally. Forget to water us and we'll dehydrate. Forget to feed us and we'll starve.
In today's age, we have to fight for our health. Our diets are mediocre at best and most of us lack essential nutrients of which our bodies are slowing becoming drained. Despite even the perfect diet, we absolutely must have Essential Fatty Acids, i.e. Omegas! Your body doesn't make it and we can't get what we need via food. And guess what omegas help with? Yup. Those off days. Even the best of us who take our multivitamins, eat well and exercise, still have the no-reason-at-all-grouchy-days. How do I know this? Because I was one.
The best source is first person. I have to admit that I could preach all day long to my patients about how important taking their Omegas were and I would take mine sporadically. But, holy moly fazoli! I finally got on a routine schedule of about 2000mg of omegas daily for about 1 1/2 weeks and I felt like a new woman. We're talking two straight weeks without an off day. Technically we should be taking 3000mg a day, which I am NOW, but it took me a good 2-3 days to figure out why the heck I felt so good. Seriously.
When I say "felt so good," I'm referring to my mental outlook and that's it. It didn't take away my knee pain or solve any of my problems. What it did do is make me less irritable, slower to get aggravated with my kids and husband; it made such an impact (and still is) that I'm freaking out because we're currently waiting for another week to get our shipment in and I've been taking straight omegas instead of my normal Pro-DHA (which is more tailored to women) because I'm scared I'm going to lose this new great balance I have going on. You can read about it HERE
It's 9:51pm on a Monday night. I'm usually asleep by now but I couldn't shut my brain off about wanting to write on this. Yes, it's made that much difference for me. I don't usually get pumped about a supplement. I'll recommend certain products and suggest that everyone be proactive about health and wellness, but this isn't a passing recommendation. This is me shouting from the rooftops to those of you out there who hate having those "off" days as much as I do. If you're not taking omegas, now is the time. If you can't get your hands on any, call me. And fyi, women need a higher ratio of DHA than men. And if you're pregnant and you are NOT taking omegas, you better not let me find out! This is brain food for babies... and trust me, they'll take yours before they'll go without ;o) That's how God designed us and only we can mess that up.
Men - you have hormones too. You need omegas just as much as women. I could spill into that but I'll just say - wives, you know. Make sure they take theirs too.
Oh. And get your adjustments ;o)
